So I pick Buffy up from the Vet and she's fine. So we go to the gallery last nite and I see a bunch of people outside and I'm thinking, "Oh, great, it's gonna be full." I walk inside and indeed it's packeroonied, but at least the gallery is large. The Mark Ryden's art work is much cooler than on the Kasmin gallery site. When I saw the photo on the site I didn't realize that the chick in the painting (see photo with me) is wearing dress made o' meat. TASTY! The people were almost as interesting as the paintings. Lots of people dressed in Old Tyme Gay 90's which was the theme of the show. Check out the gal on the stilts draped in plastic slabs o' meat and strings of wieners. Whatever turns you on, baby. ;-)

Paul Kasmin Gallery Opening
There's this cool exhibition I wanna check out tonite. The artist is Mark Ryden and the exhibition is called The Gay 90's: Old Tyme Art Show. The paintings are full of little girls with big heads and Lincoln (as in Abe) figures prominently. It's sort of fairy tale meets sicko kitsch. Sounds good! ;-) The opening is tonite (4/29) from 5 to 8 pm. Free, por supuesto.
Gonna try and go after I pick up the Buffalo from the Vet.

Buffy Girl
Hey there,
Brought Buffy to the Vet this morning. Nothing serious. She's getting her teeth cleaned since she jams her mouth shut like a vice and doesn't let me come anywhere near her with a toothbrush! But they do give her anesthesia so I am a bit concerned. She was scared when she got to the Vet's office, even tho he is SO nice. (And so is his office. It's all brand new. I highly recommend Dr. DiPolo and Worth St. Veterinary!)
So we're at the office and she's shaking and whimpering. Sniff, sniff. I didn't want to leave her there. But you know how Americans are with their teeth. Bright, white and pearly. Just kidding. They were starting to look a little nasty so, off she goes.

Anthropologie Sale
Was in Anthropologie on Fifth and saw some pretty cool (and cheap) stuff in their sale department hidden away downstairs. There are cool journals for under 8 bucks, spice jars for $2, creamers and sugar bowls for less than $8. There was this really cool wood puzzle of a sea scape that had pieces with shapes like fish and octopi reduced to 6 bills. Of coure there are clothes galore. Be in the mood to really go searching 'cause there's A LOT of stuff stuffed into a small space. But if you're in the mood you can find some good items. Saw this cute black full skirt with different colors around that I think I might have to go back and try on!

Calamity Janes Were Awesome
So I went down to Banjo Jim's last nite and saw the Calamity Jane's. It was wierd going down to Avenue C because I remember way back when you never went past A. There was one bar on B that we used to go to. Don't know the name but we called it the Crocodile Dundee bar 'cause that's where they filmed one of the scenes in the movie. But that place was IT. It was just too darn scary and dangerous to troll around past A. One time Lisa and I were going to the Croc bar and I had a car for some reason and we couldn't find parking so we started to head over to C. I stopped at a red light and all these homeless looking people started to converge on the car like something out of Dawn of the Dead. FREAKY! I remember Lisa saying "Go!" and I said, "But it's a red light." DOH! Anyway, needless to say I blew throught the red light and we got the H.E.Double Hockey Sticks out of there.
All that aside, the band was awesome. Really fine music although some 0f the singing seemed to be a bit off, but who cares! Banjo Jim's is a funky place. Kind of reminds me of a college bar in some hick town. But the music's cool as are the people.

1920's in NYC
Hey there,
Don't know if you know this but there are these cool groups in New York City who meet up AND dress up. Dances of Vice and Shanghai Mermaid are two of my faves. I've gone to dances and brunches by both and the costumes that people wear are extreme. Bustled dresses and brocade overcoats, are so cool. When I go I usually dress up in 1920's gear but people are decked out in every time period past. I just found this cool accessory on Etsy.com. It's a sweet and feminine garter with a built in flask! Most handy for those quick swigs. ;-)
The parties feature musicians with funky old-timey sounds like the Scarring Party. I love their tune, No More Room (in Hell) and tap dancers (The Minsky Sisters), and burlesque.
The next Dances of Vice event is the Swan Lake Masquerade Ball, April 30th on May 7th 2010 will be the Spring Spectacular full of Swing Dancing, Jazz and Burlesque amid cocktails and costumes. Check out the above web sites for photos and more info.

Big at Free "Drive-In" Theatre
Hey,
Tonite you can see the film Tom Hangs film Big for free money at the Tribeca Film Festival Drive-In Theatre. It's not really a drive in theatre tho. C'mon this is Manhattan. If anything you'd have a bunch of lily-livered yuppies sitting in yellow cabs. B-o-r-i-n-g! It's just a fancy, schmancy name for an outdoor viewing area. Props for the Tribeca Fest for being creative!

Edgar Allen Poe Lecture
"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity." I can relate!
There's an illustrated lecture 2nite, Edgar Allan Poe at Fordham, at NYU School of Law given by the executive director of the Bronx County Historical Society. Poe Cottage, built in 1812, is now a Poe museum known for being the location where Poe wrote The Cask of Amontillado and Annabel Lee.
Oooh, and a reception to follow at the Poe Room. (I've been to NYU receptions and the food is yummy-GOOD! We're talkin' high quality stuff.)
Wish I could go to this! (Got school 2nite.) :-( I love Poe....so dark and macabre. He makes all the goth guys and girls giddy.

Free Reading Tonight / Luna Park
There's a free reading tonight at The Lower East Side Tenement Museum of a graphic novel, Luna Park, by Kevin Baker.
Here's some info from the GraphicReporter.com :
http://www.graphicreporter.com/content/new-york-story-kevin-bakers-luna-park-interview
Luna Park, an evocative story of a former Russian soldier still recovering from the emotional wounds of Chechnya. The soldier has since settled in New York, where he works as a part of the Brooklyn mob. There in the shadow of Coney Island, he faces the ghosts of his past and the mysteries of his future through the eyes of new girlfriend, a prostitute and fortuneteller.
A prostitute and fortuneteller?? The best of all possible worlds I guess?? Okay, that little bit aside it does sound of kind of good.

Recap of Literary Upstart
So I went to L Magazine's reading yesterday and I have to say I wasn't very impressed. What was the point of these navel gazing pieces? I mean, besides navel gazing?? The one that I did like (Men Kill Things), except for some assorted and rather vivid mouse cruelties, won and goes on to the semi-finals. That one did have a point. So there!

Literary Upstart: The Search for Pocket Fiction
Gonna check out the L Magazine's Literary Upstart short story reading tonite at The Slipper Room. Thinking about submitting so I figure I should check out what kind of stuff they take. Note: There will be $1 Dogfish Head bottles. Not that $1 Dogfish Head bottles has anything to do with it. Just sayin'...

One More Week for Tim Burton at MOMA
Can't see! CAN'T SEE! But ya only got one more week to see the Tim Burton exhibit at MOMA. If you haven't gone, GO. If you have gone, GO AGAIN. I didn't realize Burton started creating basically, oh, from birth.
Burton's Stain Boy cartoons are awesome and his drawings and poems are pretty darn good as well. Kinda cool to see the little puppets that are Jack and the Corpse Bride. And if that Edward Scissorhands costume was really worn by Johnny Depp, he's kinda, um, well, he's pretty damn short.
He also worked for Disney. But I guess their sunny plan didn't jive with his dark light so he didn't last their that long. There's this Hansel and Gretel show at the exhibit that he did for Disney which was only shown ONCE on TV in the 80's or 90's. (Sorry don't remember when that was. Burton overload.) ;-) Just go!
If you can't, check out http://www.moma.org/interactives/exhibitions/2009/timburton/.

Design Your Own Chocolate!
Just found this awesome online chocolate shop, ChocrÃ, where you can design you own chocolate bar. I've hit the chocolate mutha load!! Gummy Bears, Licorice and Walnuts, Oh, my! (Not too thrilled about the chives, sea salt and bacon, but hey, go for it.) I'm gonna order my own very special chocolate bar made out of dark chocolate, ginger, cashew nuts (my fave!), shaved coconut and toffee. Although I am considering adding pop rocks for that extra wow and sizzle. ;-) Nah, I'm gonna leave that out. And I'm gonna call my lovely chocolate bar... mb in the chocolate city. Hmm, not too catchy. Gotta rethink that name. Give me a shout if you got a better one.
